Going to college is the first step towards real independence. Students experience the responsibility of taking care of themselves on a full time basis. Most think of studies and doing laundry as part of those responsibilities, but that's only the beginning.
Away from the safety of their families and communities, the second leading cause of death among persons ages 18-24 was homicide*. While you can instill good study habits, you are neglecting good safety habits. Part of growth is learning how to negotiate dangerous situations.
