Self Defense for Schools
Crime on campus is a primary concern of any learning institution. From local high schools to prestigious universities, no one is immune to violence. School violence is a subset of youth violence, a broader public health problem. The recent years have turned the "don't ask, don't tell" attitude towards violence has now become a central focus for school administrators who have embraced this reality and are proactive about student safety.
Part of student growth is assuming personal responsibility on a full time basis. Most think of those responsibilities are studying, paying some bills and doing laundry, but that's only the beginning. The blueprints for violence prevention are becoming readily available to the public, we just have to know how to read them. Different strategies are being put into place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Education, and the Department of Justice as they gather and analyze data from a variety of sources to gain a more complete understanding of school violence.
As students grow independent they move away from the safety of their families and communities. With that independence comes increased exposure to human nature, both good and bad. While we can instill good study habits, we are neglecting good safety habits like how to negotiate dangerous situation. It's up to parents, faculty and school administrators to embrace this reality, take a stand and take preventative action.
